The passes

The Yangguan and Yumenguan passes on the old silk road, not far from Dunhuang, served as check points, meeting places and much like a border control gate or pass for the region. Not much remains of either. The Jade gate has one large block tower standing, with smaller towers visible in the distance, along with sections of the Han Dynasty greatest wall. The other gate has been reconstructed to show the watch towers, passport control and other features of the region.

Photo 1 is a reconstructed pagoda. Photo 2 is the original watch tower and view of the expansive desert. Photo 3 is our lunch stop. The area is well known for its sweet grapes and a family have created a restaurant, building private dining rooms shaded by grape vines. Ingenious, and cool.
